Gary D. Jolliff joined the Oregon State University faculty in 1976 as an Associate Professor in the Crop Science Department, specializing in the study of meadowfoam and its development as a domesticated crop in the Willamette Valley. As a part of his meadowfoam research, Jolliff headed up the Oregon Experiment Station Research New Crops Research Project 481 from 1978 until his retirement in 2002. The Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station was established under the provisions of the federal Hatch Act of 1887. Agricultural experimentation began at Oregon Agricultural College in 1888. In 1901 the first branch station was established at Union, in northeast Oregon, to address issues pertaining to the agriculture in that part of the state.
