George Thomas was born on December 29, 1866. He received A.B. and M.A. degrees from Harvard and a Ph.D. from Halle University in Germany. Dr. Thomas was elected Superintendent of Public Instruction in Utah in 1921, but he resigned that position, later that year, in order to serve as President of the University of Utah.
