In 1853 George Whitworth, a minister in the Ohio Valley, set off for the Western frontier to establish a college that would provide a “good English education and a thorough religious training.” Fifty families joined his mission trek to the Northwest. By the time they reached Oregon, only Whitworth’s family had persisted. It was 30 years before he was able to revive his dream of establishing a college. “In 1883, in the village of Sumner, in Washington Territory, George Whitworth founded Sumner Ac...

Whitworth College was founded officially on February 19, 1890. During the years 1987 and 1988 plans were made to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Of course, this celebration, all during the 1989 year, was an opportune time for a fund drive. (Timothy R. Eaton, B .A. ’74) was commissioned to produce a motion picture film, “Whitworth College” for promotion of the financial campaign. This file includes the many film clips used to make the film and the final product in various formats. Fr...

The story begins with the founding of the Sumner Academy by George F. Whitworth and four of his colleagues on December 12, 1883. Following the move to Spokane on property donated by J. P. Graves, the minutes of the board continue the story to 1923 (Box 5). There is a gap in the record up to the coming of Frank F. Warren in 1940. The record the...
