Diaries, including engineering notes and memoranda, relating to Hughes's employment on the survey of Spokane Falls & Northern Railroad, the survey and construction of Great Northern Railway's transcontinental route and several branch lines, and the construction of Great Northern's Cascade Tunnel (1900). No diaries dated 1889, 1906, 1941, and 1942.

The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam. John J. Hughes was trained as a civil engineer and came to Spokane Falls in 1888. He worked with E. J. Roberts and John F. Stevens on the survey of the Spokane Falls & Northern Railroad. He was also employed in the survey and construction of the Great Northern Railway’s transcontinental route and several branch lines.
