Ellis Island is a former immigration inspection station. As the nation's busiest immigrant inspection station from 1892 to 1954, it processed approximately 12 million immigrants to the United States in New York Harbor, within the states of New York and New Jersey. Ernest Lister was born in Halifax, England on June 15, 1870. His family immigrated to the United States in 1884 to be near Lister's uncle, who was Mayor of Tacoma, WA. Lister operated a foundry and woodworking shop in Tacoma and won election to the Tacoma City Council in 1894 as a Populist. Hilma Nelson was born on November 29, 1886 in Værøy, Norway to Mathias Jacobson and Sofie Andreason. In addition to Hilma, Mathias and Sofie had four other children: John (Johan), Anna, Harold, and Thorvald. Hilma's father was a fisherman, and he died in a shipwreck when Hilma was only six years old. Hilma's brother Harold also drowned that summer, having fallen in a well at the age of three. Emmanuel Lutheran organized on July 21, 1913. The Ladies’ Aid had organized the previous January. The first church was erected and ready for use by May of 1914. A new building was erected in 1948, and dedicated November 28.
