George Thomas was born on December 29, 1866. He received A.B. and M.A. degrees from Harvard and a Ph.D. from Halle University in Germany. Dr. Thomas was elected Superintendent of Public Instruction in Utah in 1921, but he resigned that position, later that year, in order to serve as President of the University of Utah. Albert Ray Olpin was born June 1, 1898 in Pleasant Grove, Utah. He received an A.B. in Physics from Brigham Young University in 1923 and a Ph.D. in Physics from Columbia University in 1930.
