The purpose of the intercollegiate athletics program at the University of Utah is to interrelate sports with the general aims and objectives of the University and to provide an opportunity for the greatest number of students to participate in intercollegiate sports. The bulk of the materials in this collection relate to the University of Utah's participation in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and its successor, the Western Athletic Conference.

An Athletic Association was organized at the University of Utah in 1894 and the first paid coach was hired in 1900. In 1925 Ike Armstrong became coach and head of the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics in the Department of Physical Education, Health, and Hygiene.
