John Schmitt was born and raised in San Jose, California. A retired teacher of forty years, Schmitt began researching the McChrystal family in 1981. His research of this mining family led him to investigate the Tintic mining camp that started in 1869 and to follow the mining activities in the Tintic Mining area.
