Henry Weeks Sanderson was born on 13 March 1829 in Bladford, Hampden County, Massachusetts, to James and Mary Jane Sanderson. He enlisted in the Mormon Battlion in 1846 and later became a scout and hunter. He learned the Shoshone language well enough to converse with the Indians and was sent by the LDS Church to deliver goods to them and serve as interpreter.
