The Thompson Family Papers 1862-1892

The Thompson Family Papers consists of two diaries kept by Henry Elliot Thompson while serving with the Twentieth Wisconsin Infantry dating from July 9,1862 to August 17, 1863 and May 11, 1864 to February 21, 1865, a diary detailing Thompson's trip through Yellowstone National Park in the summer of 1891, correspondence, and self published materials. Descriptions include experiences at the battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, the siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi, the capture of Yazoo, Mississippi, the campaign to capture Mobile, Alabama, the siege of Fort Morgan. Other items discussed include entering Yellowstone National Park and visiting some of the principal sites within the park and the difficulties in managing the horse herd they were driving.

Henry Elliot Thompson was born on March 13, 1841 in Cooperstown, Pennsylvania. He was the fifth child of Hugh G. And Martha Thompson, and had a twin brother named Joseph. Hugh Thompson was a tailor by trade, and he moved his family from Pennsylvania to Ohio and back before settling in Vernon County, Wisconsin sometime prior to 1850.
