University of Utah Department of Meteorology records 1948-1984 1974-1982

The Department of Meteorology at the University of Utah is one of the oldest active meteorology departments in the United States. Organization of the department began in 1946 with the first Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology being awarded in June 1948. Currently the department awards both undergraduate and graduate degrees. The collection contains memoranda, reports, budgets, and meeting minutes related to general departmental administration. Also included are correspondence and reports related to research projects in meteorology funded by various federal government agencies.

J. Vern Hales was born in Provo, Utah, on July 21, 1917. He died at his residence in Las Vegas, Nevada, on August 29, 1997. Hales began his education at Brigham Young University in his home state, receiving a B.S. in physics and mathematics in 1938. He continued his graduate studies at the California Institute of Technology, receiving an M.S. in meteorology in 1941, and in 1952 he received a Ph.D. in meteorology from the University of California, Los Angeles. ...
