Thomas Lanier Williams was born on March 26, 1911 in Columbus, Mississippi. His father, Cornelius, a salesman who was largely absent had a bad relationship with Tennessee, the second of his three children. Educator and poet Mia Phoebus was a housemate and confidante of Tennessee Williams during the summer of 1940, at the age of 19. Born Ethel Elkovsky in New York City, Phoebus has been lecturing in the Beverly Hills, California School District for thirty years.
