St. John Greer Ervine had a long and influential career in the theatre. Born to deaf-mute Protestant parents in a suburb of Belfast, he moved to London in 1900 where he worked as a clerk and became active in the Fabian Society. An accomplished writer of realistic plays, his work first appeared in 1911, and he enjoyed considerable success, leading to his long friendship with George Bernard Shaw and the opportunity to manage the Abbey Theatre in 1915-1916.
