Hazel Hunkins-Hallinan, daughter of Anna Isabel (Whittingham) and Ensign Lewis Hunkins, was born on June 6, 1890, in Aspen, Colorado. She received her A.B. from Vassar College in 1913 and worked towards her master's degree in chemistry at the University of Missouri. Denied the opportunity to teach chemistry and physics because she was a woman, she was inspired to join the National Woman's Party.
