Born in the Western N.C. mountains to a Baptist minister and his wife, seventh of fourteen children. Earned his law degree at Wake Forest. Opened law practice in Fuquay-Varina, N.C., and later founded Capitol Broadcasting Company in Raleigh, N.C.
