The Pierian Club was organized in 1894 by Mrs. D.F. Rivers of Kansas City, Kansas, and was one of the first African American literary clubs in the area. This collection of Pierian Club records contains club histories, financial and miscellaneous records, meeting minutes, yearbooks, photographs and a 50th anniversary scrapbook, 1894-1944, and a videotape of Club's Centennial celebration, 1994.

The Pierian Club was organized in 1894 by Mrs. D.F. Rivers of Kansas City, Kansas. Named for the “Pierian spring” of Thomas Pope’s Essay on Criticism, the organization was one of the first African American literary clubs in the area. A club for women only, bimonthly meetings featured lectures, discussions of current events, and correspondence coursework; members also engaged in community service and participated in social events.
