In 1877 Tufts moved from New Hampshire to Atchison, Kansas, where he was employed as an assistant engineer by the Union Pacific Railroad. Although trained as a civil engineer at the New London (New Hampshire) Institute, by 1879, Tufts began to dabble in mortgage and real estate deals while still an employee of the Union Pacific Railroad.
