Dr. S.H. Thompson, Sr., was a founder of Douglass Hospital, a facility dedicated to the care of African Americans, in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1899. His son, S.H. Thompson, Jr., served as principal of Sumner High School (Kansas City, Kansas) from 1951-1972. The collection includes papers and photographs of both S.H. Thompson, Jr. and Sr., as well as material from other family members.

Sumner High School (SHS) began in 1905, following passage of Kansas House Bill No. 890, which allowed for the segregation of Kansas high schools. SHS classes met afternoons in the old Kansas City, Kansas High School building. The first SHS class graduated in 1906. Thompson (1870-1950), a West Virginia native and 1892 graduate of Howard University (Washington D.C.), settled in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1898, where he, along with other colleagues, opened a pharmacy.
