Edith Marie Clarke papers 1861-1950

This collection involves many aspects of Edith Clarke's life, including: correspondence and genealogical material on her family; correspondence with many prominent Lawrence citizens and Kansas University professors, papers pertaining to the KU Library and other Kansas libraries, ca. 1900; and personal financial records, bank statements and tax receipts. Also included are numerous photos, greeting cards, especially Christmas cards, and calling cards.

Edith Clarke, a Mayflower descendent and member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, was born in Chetopa, Kansas. Her father, Adam Clarke, was a Sac and Fox Indian agent. She resided in Lawrence most of her life but moved to a farm near Eudora, Kansas, during her later years. Watson graduated from KU in 1877 and was hired as an Assistant Librarian. She was promoted to Head Librarian in 1887 and retired in 1921. In 1924 the library moved from Spooner Hall to its current home, which was named Watson Library in her honor. She died in 1943.
