"Up Lurid Stars" (photographic facsimile of manuscript poem). By Walt Whitman. Ca. 1861-1865. Ca. 1861-1865

Charles E. Feinberg of Detroit Michigan, a collector of Walt Whitman material who owned the Whitman manuscript of thepoem, "Up the Lurid Stars," donated this photographic facsimile print to the University of Kansas Libraries in 1959. This Civil War era poem is about the 34 stars of the Union turning red as a baleful warning. The original of this manuscript is now in the Charles E. Feinberg Collection of the Papers of Walt Whitman, 1839-1919 in the Library of Congress. Although this poem was not published by Whitman, the Library of Congress catalog entry mentions its relationship to "World Take Notice," a poem first published in 1865.
