Maloney received his B.S. from Illinois in 1936, his M.S. in 1939, and his Ph.D. 1941, both from Penn State. He joined the faculty in 1946 as a Professor of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering and as the Director of the Research Foundation. He retired in 1985.
