Giovanni Costa letters November 15, 1851

On the same day Giovanni Costa of the Society of Jesuits (S.J.) writes these three letters to three English contacts: Thomas Grant (1816-1870), Roman Catholic bishop of Southward; Jesuit Father Brownbill in London; and Nicholas Patrick Stephen Wiseman (1802-1865), cardinal and archbishop of Westminster. In each of these letters, he provides an introduction to Mr. Giacomo Laguita (1813-1895), described as a good Catholic and the lawyer of the British Legation in Naples and asks that his contacts extend assistance to Mr. Laguita as necessary. Mr. Laguita was also known as Sir James Philip Lacaita.

Born of Irish parents in France, Thomas Grant received his formal education at Ushaw College, Durham, England. Afterward, Grant went to Rome, where he was ordained and eventually became the rector of the English College from 1844-1851. While there, he also helped to petition the Pope for the restoration of a diocesan hierarchy in England.
