William Clarke Quantrill was born in Canal Dover, Ohio in 1837. He came to Kansas as a young man, and taught school for a while before he became active in the border wars, between free state and pro-slavery forces in the fight for Kansas statehood. He fought on the Confederate side during the Civil War, participating in guerrilla warfare. Andrew Williams was a slave belonging to Henry Williams near Mt. Vernon, Lawrence Co., Missouri. Fought with Gen. Price in Arkansas in 1861. Was freed by the 6th Kansas Regiment in a raid in 1862. Sent to Fort Scott. Moved to Lawrence: gives an account of Quantrill's raid August 21, 1863. Moved to Topeka: gives an account of Price's attack in October, 1864. Hired by 7th Kansas Cavalry until they went farther west. Williams worked as gardener for William Connelley from 1908 to 1910. ...

Blunt was born in Trenton, Maine to John Blunt and Sally Gilpatrick Blunt. Blunt lived and worked on his family farm until he was 14. He may have spent some time at the Ellsworth Military Academy in Ellsworth, Maine. He became a sailor on a merchant vessel when he was 15, and attained the rank of captain at 20.
