Artur Schnabel was an Austrian pianist and teacher whose performances and recordings made him a legend in his own time and a model of scholarly musicianship to all later pianists. He lived in Berlin from 1900 and was a leading piano teacher at the State Academy of Music in Berlin from 1925 to 1933. Mary Van Nes is an American pianist who studied with Arthur Schnabel from 1931 to 1934. In later years, she was active in Westchester County, New York as a performer and as the organizer of the concert series of the Hudson River Museum.
