William Nelson Parker was born in Columbus, Ohio, on June 14, 1919. He received his A.B. from Harvard in 1939, his M.A. in 1941, and his Ph.D. in 1951. Parker was an assistant professor of economics at Williams College from 1951 to 1956, and an associate professor, then professor of economics at the University of North Carolina from 1956 to 1962.
