Hugh Byas papers 1928-1941

Scrapbooks, writings and research files on 11 reels of microfilm (HM 95). The research files consist of pamphlets, periodicals, newspaper clippings and news bulletins on all aspects of Japanese life which were compiled for lectures at Yale University, 1941-1945, and for use in a book which was never published. The scrapbooks contain clippings of his articles which appeared in (London), and , 1928-1939. Also a small number of drafts of articles written between 1932 and 1939. Arthur Hays Sulzberger (September 12, 1891 – December 11, 1968) was the publisher of The New York Times from 1935 to 1961. He was born in New York City and graduated from Columbia College in 1913; he married Iphigene Bertha Ochs in 1917. In 1918 he began working at the Times, and became publisher when his father-in-law, Adolph Ochs, the previous Times publisher, died in 1935. Sulzberger broadened the Times’ use of background reporting, pictures, and feature articles, and expanded its sections. ...

Baldwin, Hanson Weightman, 1903-1991

Hanson Baldwin was a writer for the Baltimore Sun (1928), the New York Times (1929-1968), and Reader's Digest (1968-1976). He reported extensively on World War II, and in 1942 he became military editor for the New York Times. Baldwin was co-chairman of the armaments group of the Council on Foreign Relations.
