Madeline Earle Stanton correspondence 1915-1963 (inclusive), 1927-1933

Madeline Stanton was secretary to Harvey Cushing at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. She accompanied him to Yale in 1933, and after his death, she and John F. Fulton headed the Histiorical Library of the Yale Medical Library. The corresponence consists of letters and cards sent to Madeline Stanton by neurosurgical colleagues and former students of Harvey Cushing, by employees at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, and others. Major correspondents include Percival Bailey, Claude S. Beck, Hugh Cairns, Louise Eisenhardt, Eric Oldberg, and Paul Martin. The letters document aspects of Miss Stanton's role as Cushing's secretary and her private life.

Harvey Williams Cushing was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 8, 1869. He graduated from Yale College in 1891 and in 1895 received his M.D. and A.M. degrees from the Harvard Medical School. He served on the staff of the Johns Hopkins University Hospital from 1901 to 1912, where he devoted himself to neurological surgery. Eric Oldberg was born in 1901. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University and trained under Harvey Cushing in Boston. Madeline Earle Stanton was born on June 9, 1898, in Canton, Massachusetts. After receiving her B.A. degree from Smith College in 1919, she was secretary to Agide Jacchia, conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra.
