Harvey Williams Cushing was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 8, 1869. He graduated from Yale College in 1891 and in 1895 received his M.D. and A.M. degrees from the Harvard Medical School. He served on the staff of the Johns Hopkins University Hospital from 1901 to 1912, where he devoted himself to neurological surgery. Madeline Earle Stanton was born on June 9, 1898, in Canton, Massachusetts. After receiving her B.A. degree from Smith College in 1919, she was secretary to Agide Jacchia, conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra. Beginning in 1920, Stanton worked with Dr. Harvey Cushing at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston and later at the Yale School of Medicine.
