These papers document Bates' career as a missionary,academic, and author. They also include an extensive collection of informationfor his book on Christian effort in Chinese society from 1900 to 1950, which hewas in the process of writing at the time of his death. There are over 3,000pages of drafts for this book included in the collection. The papers includecorrespondence, notes, writings, and printed material related to Bates' work inNanking, China, particularly his role in relief work during World War II. MinerSearle Bates (1897-1978) was educated at Hiram College (B.A., 1916), OxfordUniversity (B.A., 1919; M.A., 1920), and Yale University (Ph.D., 1935). He wasa missionary, professor of history at the University of Nanking, China from1920-1950, organizing member of Nanking International Safety Zone Committee andchairman of Nanking International Relief Committee, 1939-1941, and professor ofmissions, Union Theological Seminary, New York, 1950-1965.
