This collection consists of over one thousand photographs, including various formats photographs, including cabinet cards, boudoir cards, and cartes-de-visite photographs, as well as unmounted photographic prints. The collection includes the work of more than three hundred identified photographers or photographic studios, and more than three hundred and fifty unidentified photographers. The image content mainly documents places and individuals in the American West.

F. Jay Haynes (1853-1921), a photographer who traveled extensively in the West, was best known for his early photographs of Yellowstone National Park. In the 1870s and 1880s, Haynes operated studios in Moorhead, Minnesota, Fargo, North Dakota, and St. Paul, Minnesota. As the official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad, he maintained the "Haynes Palace Studio," a special railroad car equipped as a mobile photography studio. Morris Badt was born in Schwersenz, Posen, Germany in 1830. He emigrated to New York in 1847 and moved to San Francsico in 1851, where he established a mercantile business. He later established businesses in Elko and Wells, Nevada. He married Lena Posener in 1868. Badt died in San Francisco in 1899. Mirel Lipshuetz Badt was the stepmother of Morris Badt.
