Padraic Colum was a noted playwright, essayist, novelist, poet, and author of books for children. Born on December 8, 1881, in Longford, Ireland, Colum came to the United States in 1914 and died on January 12, 1972, in Enfield, Connecticut. Though Colum worked briefly for a railroad, he became a full-time writer in Dublin, Ireland, in 1901.
