Roland Arthur Young was born in Loveland, Colorado, on May 27, 1910. He earned his A.B. (English) at Baylor University in 1932 and his Ph.D. (Political Science) at Harvard University in 1940. After college Young worked at various jobs in Washington D.C. and was for a time secretary of the U.S. Senate's Committee on Foreign Relations.
