Mary Ramage Peterson was born in McGregor, Iowa in 1876. She graduated from the Cumnock School of Oratory at Northwestern University in 1897, received a post-graduate degree in 1898 (Speech), and studied with a private tutor for a half year (1899). She taught for two years at Lawrence University where she was also Dean of Women. She was an accomplished and popular reader and actress.
