Edgar Lee Masters (1869-1950) Papers ca. 1927

The papers consist of a typescript draft, with minor editorial revisions and corrections, of Masters' biography of Chicago attorney Levy Mayer (1858-1922). The book, (New Haven, 1927), was Masters' first full-length biography. Mayer's widow, Rachel, who copyrighted the book and published it in a limited edition of 1,500 copies, wrote the biography in consideration of a significant payment from the Mayer family and as a gesture of respect to Abraham Mayer, Levy Mayer's brother. Abraham Mayer represented Masters during divorce litigation in the early 1920s. Levy Mayer and the New Industrial Era
