Moses Mendelssohn was an internationally renowned philosopher of the Enlightenment while remaining an observant Jew who defended Judaism and advocated for Jewish civil rights. Bruno Strauss was a historian and philologist who lived from 1889-1969. He was raised in Marburg and studied there and in Berlin. From 1912-1938 he taught at the University of Berlin, but was forced to flee to Shreveport, Louisiana, United States, in 1939.
