Albert Dann was born in Frankfurt in 1868. His grandfather, Dr. Leopold Stein, was one of the first liberal rabbis in Germany. Albert moved to Augsburg in 1899 and worked in wholesale for lining materials. He was active in the Jewish community's leadership and served in World War I, despite being over the age limit.
