Virginia Sorensen was born Virginia Eggertsen in Provo, Utah, on 17 February 1912. She graduated from Brigham Young University in 1934, and she also studied at the University of Missouri School of Journalism and at Stanford University. She married Frederick Chester Sorensen, but the marriage ended in divorce.
