Correspondence, articles, plays, histories, playbills, theater advertisements, notes, and scripts. The materials document Hansen's teaching and directing career at Brigham Young University. The items also document the Hill Cumorah Pagent. The collection documents Hansen's career as a professor of theater arts and a local theater producer in Iowa, Michigan, New York, and Utah. Hansen either studied or worked in university drama and theater at Iowa State University, Michigan State University (Lansing, MI), Utah State University (Logan, Utah, Doctorate program, 1947-52), and Brigham Young University (Provo, Utah, professor of Speech and Drama, 1952-ca. 1980s). Most of this material deals with Hansen's early involvement in the founding, and his forty-year involvement (1937-1977) as director, of the Hill Cumorah Pageant, a religious pageant (LDS or Mormon Church) held annually outside Palmyra, New York. The play's central theme is the discovery of the Book of Mormon at the "Hill Cumorah." Hansen first became involved with the pageant while serving as a missionary for the Mormon Church (Eastern States Mission, 1937-1939). Hansen's papers also document the evolving nature of academic, local and traveling theater in the United States from post-World War I (i.e., stage magic, the vaudeville stage, traveling tent shows, etc.,) to the 1970s. The collection also documents Hansen's involvement with American Education Theater Association, the United States Military United Service Organization (USO), the Cleveland Playhouse (Cleveland, OH), the Ledger Theater (Grand Ledger, Michigan), the Proscenium Players (Grand Ledger, Michigan), the LDS Church Educational System (CES, 1941-42). Hansen's contributors and collaborators include Lael Woodbury (co-theater owner and producer), H. Wayne Driggs (playwright), Don Oscarson (playwright), and Crawford Gates (composer).
