Eric Carle was born 25 June 1929 in Syracuse, NY, the son of Erich W. (a civil servant) and Johanna (Oelschlaeger) Carle. He attended the Akademie der bildenden Kuenste, Stuttgart, Germany (1946-1950) and served in the U.S. Army (1952-1954). He has been employed as a poster designer (1950-1952) by the U.S. Information Center (Stuttgart, Germany), a graphic designer for the (1954-1956), an art director with L. W. Frohlich & Co. (1956-1963), and a free-lance writer, illustrator, and designer since 1963. New York Times

Steven Kellogg was born 26 October 1941 in Norwalk, CT, the son of Robert E. and Hilma Marie (Johnson) Kellogg. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design (B.F.A., 1963) and did graduate study at American University. An author and illustrator of children's books and artist, Kellogg has also been an Instructor in etching at American University (1966) and taught printmaking and painting.
