Alexander Lurkis was a civil engineer and original member of the Civil Service Technical Guild, founded in 1937. From 1956-1958 Lurkis was president of AFSCME Local 375, the Civil Service Technical Guild. The collection consists of ten black and white photographs from the 1930s (circa) to the 1950s picturing Alexander Lurkis with other members of the Civil Service Technical Guild at conventions and retreats, and from the installation of Lurkin as president of AFSCME Local 375, the Civil Service Technical Guild.

The Civil Service Technical Guild was organized in 1937 as Council 6 of the Civil Service Forum by three engineers, Henry F. Cunningham, William F. Elliot, and George Ellenoff. Their first activity was a protest in Albany against subcontracting--"farming out," and the Buckley Law (1937) repealed a provision in the new New York City charter which required farming out of large projects.
