Frank R. Oakley Civil War papers 1862-1865

The Frank R. Oakley Civil War papers span the period 1862 to 1865 and measure 0.1 linear feet. The papers consist primarily of transciptions of orders issued by Stephen Mallory, Secretary of the Confederate Navy during the American Civil War, to naval officers in Richmond Virginia and elsewhere, dated 1862. Accomanying these documents are two letters written to Oakley by United States Secreatary of State William H. Seward, dated 1865. Built in Philadelphia as the Habana, the CSS Sumter was originally used as a blockade runner in New Orleans. In 1861, she was purchased for use by the Confederate Government.
