Dorothea Dundas Disston was born in 1912 to Dorothea D. Pratt and William D. Disston. She belonged to the "Disston Steel Family," owners of the Disston Saw Works. Dorothea earned a stenographer's certificate from Pierce School of Business Administration in 1933, and married Howard C. James in 1935.
