George Armistead Smathers (b. Nov. 14, 1913, Atlantic City, N.J.-d. Jan. 20, 2007, Indian Creek Village, Fla.), a U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator from Florida, graduated from the University of Florida law school in 1938. During World War II he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942 to 1945. In 1955, the Florida Legislature authorized establishment of Florida's fifth public university to serve the southeastern region of the state. Boca Raton banker Thomas F.
