The collection contains printed materials relating to the early twentieth century American author Thomas Wolfe. Items of particular interest are signed and numbered art prints and illustrations of Wolfe's boyhood home in Asheville, North Carolina, now the Thomas Wolfe Memorial, a North Carolina historic site. Also included are several commemorative keepsakes and publications issued by the Thomas Wolfe Society as a part of the Society's annual meeting.

Bernstein met Thomas Wolfe in 1925 on a voyage between Europe and New York. Wolfe and Bernstein, the wife of a prominent New York stock broker and 18 years older than Wolfe, became lovers in Oct. 1925 and remained so for the next five years. Thomas Clayton Wolfe was born October 3, 1900 in Asheville, North Carolina. He attended local Asheville schools, graduated from high school at age 15, and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
