Grant was educated at Boston University (A.B., 1898; A.M., 1900; Ph. D., 1906; S.T.B., 1907). He was ordained in the Methodist Episcopal Church, 1900, served as superintendent of the American Friends Schools in Ramallah and Jerusalem, 1901-1904, and pastor, East Saugus, Mass., 1904-1907. He was professor of Biblical literature at Smith College, 1907-1917 and at Haverford College, 1917-1938. He was actively involved with archaeological digs in Palestine.
