Edith Morton Packard was born on November 19, 1873, in Illinois. She entered Mount Holyoke in 1893, but left in 1896 when her mother became ill. She received a B.L. from Syracuse University in 1898. She worked at Rome High School (Rome, New York) from 1897-98, and then for a short time at Syracuse University. From 1907-09 she worked as assistant librarian at the New York City Y.W.C.A.
