The collection was started by Buddy Basch when he was fourteen years of age and was writing for various New Jersey newspapers and magazines and includes jokes and gags from some of the most well-known comedians of the mid 20th century.

Buddy Basch, born in 1922 in South Orange, New Jersey and educated at Columbia University, was a columnist, radio critic and editor before becoming a successful talent agent in the 1950s. With his partner Dick Gersh he formed the talent agency Buddy Basch Associates. Though primarily an agent for singers, his clients also included musicians, comedians, actors and a variety of performing artists.
