Emilie Rolette Hooe papers 1781-1882

The collection consists of personal papers, In English and French, belonging to members of the Rolette, Hooe, Gaulthier, and other allied families and their estates. The papers predominantly relate to real property, but also include correspondence, marriage licenses, and a baptismal record. Land papers include deeds, correspondence, and other documents relating to property on or near Mackinac and Bois Blank Islands, Michigan; Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; and Quebec, Canada, owned by Mackinac Company fur trader [Jean] Joseph Rolette (1781-1842) or members of allied families or their estates, including Laurent Rolette, Joseph Rolette, Jr., Charles and Magdeleine Gaulthier, Emilie Rolette Hooe, and others. Correspondence consists predominantly of incoming letters to Joseph Rolette regarding legal matters and real estate, and of letters to Emilie Rolette Hooe, daughter of Joseph Rolette, regarding his estate, the estate of her husband, Major Alexander S. Hooe, and her own real property. A few personal letters to Hooe are also present

Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, fur trader. In 1804 Rolette arrived in Prairie du Chien, where until 1821 he was associated with several fur trading companies. An agent of the American Fur Company from 1821 to 1834, Rolette and his partners Hercules Dousman and H.H. Sibley in 1834 became stockholders in Ramsay Crooks' reorganized American Fur Company and contracted to run its Western Outfit.
