Christopher Columbus reproductions and notes ca. 1492-ca. 1936

Collection consists of photoreproductions of documents about Columbus made by Bigelow during the 1920s from originals at the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid and the Archivo General de Indias in Seville. Materials include copy of journal abstract, 1492-1493, of Bartolomé de las Casas; documents relating to coat of arms granted to Columbus; his will; and Bigelow's notes.

Christopher Columbus was likely born in October 1451 in Genoa, Republic of Genoa. His name in Ligurian is Cristoffa Corombo. In one of his writings, he says he went to sea at the age of 10. In 1473, Columbus began his apprenticeship as business agent for the important Centurione, Di Negro and Spinola families of Genoa.
