Municipal Committee for the Relief of Homeowners records 1934-1938

The Municipal Committee for the Relief of Homeowners was a voluntary group originally appointed in 1934 by the New York City Board of Aldermen and later assisted by the U.S. Works Progress Administration. Its purpose was to provide advice to homeowners who faced loss of their homes because of an inability to pay their mortgages or property taxes. Records consist of approximately 400 case files and 17,000 file cards. Case files originated in the Committee's Manhattan office (although the cases are not limited to that borough) and they contain applications, memoranda and correspondence on each case. Bulk of the file cards consist of those kept by the central office (covering all five boroughs) and those handled by the Manhattan office.
