Fran Lee papers 1945-1975

Fran Lee, 1910- (nee Frances Lederman), actress, consumer advocate and television personality, began her public career in the 1940s. In the years 1948-1949, she toured the United States as a member of the cast of Medea. Since the early 1950s she has made regular television appearances on a number of programs and has hosted several of her own shows. Appearing under such names as "Mrs. Fix-It", she provided household tips and consumer advice. As a consumer spokesman, she played a leading role in the enactment of the "pooper scooper" law in New York City. She was also one of the first public figures to openly discuss menopause, and was the founder of Menonomous, a support group for women in menopause. Collection consists of materials documenting Fran Lee's career as an actress and television personality. Bulk of the materials is videotape and kinescope recordings of Fran Lee's television appearances, which date from 1949 to 1976. These include her guest appearances on early television programs such as the Skitch Henderson Show, Who Do You Trust? (with Johnny Carson), the Steve Allen Show, and the Don Ameche-Frances Langford Show. There are also recordings of commercials in which she appeared, regular consumer news segments she hosted for WPIX and WNEW in New York City, and segments in which she provided household advice during the "Ladies Day Movie with Fran Lee". Collection also includes family correspondence and letters Fran Lee received in response to her appearances as Mrs. Fix-It.
